Greetings from Minister Ron R. Schuler National Trucking Week (Sept. 2-8, 2018) To the Manitoba Trucking Association and its Members: As Manitoba's Minister of Infrastructure, I am honoured to send greetings to the Manitoba Trucking Association (MTA) and its members during National Trucking Week this year. The trucking industry in Manitoba is not only the backbone of our economy, but the largest single contributor to the social fabric of the communities we live in. Trucks deliver to us everything we eat, use or consume. They navigate the roads of our cities, towns and rural communities every single day of the year. Also, we should never lose sight of the fact that the considerable tax dollars that this industry generates help support and sustain a wide variety of different social programs, numerous recreational services, our hospitals and the different infrastructures that we all use daily. The past year has been a particularly challenging year for all of us that work in this industry, whether it be in the private or public sector. The Humboldt, Sask., tragedy shocked the nation to its core and forced all of us to take a closer look at what we can do to prevent tragedies like this from ever happening again. The United States' latest position on trade with Canada, if unchanged, will undoubtedly have a significant effect on the volume of goods we move across the Canada/U.S. border. The federal electronic logging device (ELD) mandate will have lasting repercussions on carriers and shippers alike. The recent announcement by Greyhound that it is eliminating their service in western Canada will dramatically alter the passenger vehicle landscape in Manitoba, and that of western Canada. However, as we gather this week to celebrate all of your efforts and the incredible jobs you all do day in and day out, we need to remember this industry is a resilient one. It always has been, and it always will be. In addition, Manitoba Infrastructure looks forward to working hand in hand with the MTA and its members to ensure the trucking industry remains strong, vibrant and safe. To that extent, we will continue to work hard to eliminate red tape and duplication of process. We will continue to modernize our facility audit and carrier profile systems to meet the needs of all carriers today. We are committed to consulting with you as we decide how to implement the federal ELD mandate. We will also work closely with you and our partners to develop a mandatory entry-level driver-training program that fits your needs. That being said, this is a week of celebration for the trucking industry and those that work in it. On behalf of the Manitoba government, I want you to know that we applaud all of your hard work and dedication. 2 - NATIONAL TRUCKING WEEK Celebrating 37 Successful Years! It cannot be understated how important the trucking industry is to the Manitoba economy with close to 475 for hire trucking companies headquartered here in Manitoba and that the trucking sector contributes more than two billion dollars directly to our provincial GDP. Our international borders see approximately 400,000 trucks crossing into the United States every year, moving nearly nine billion dollars worth of goods and products. Your industry sector alone employs close to five percent of our entire workforce. These types of numbers are staggering and demonstrate the importance of your industry to the social and economic well-being of all Manitobans. As we move into the fall of 2017, the trucking sector industry in Manitoba is once again facing substantial challenges. The trucking industry must make efforts to understand and adjust to the upcoming national electronic logging devices mandate. Somewhat related to that, is your industry's desire for better truck parking locations in Manitoba and an infrastructure renewal program that can meet its growing needs. Harmonizing transportation policy with our partners in the New West Partnership Trade Agreement, a qualified driver shortage, driver retention problems, and the removal of unnecessary and cumbersome safety legislation and regulation are also issues that we need to address together. We will work tirelessly over the next year and develop solutions that work for both industry and government. Having said that, this is a week of celebration for your industry and the fantastic work that you do. So on behalf of the Manitoba government, I want you to know that we applaud the enormous contribution your industry makes to the quality of life that we all enjoy here in Manitoba.
