For the past 75 years, the company has continued to grow by offering an unwavering commitment to community combined with high- quality products. The Cantor family has taken pride in offering delivery service since they first started selling household staples more than seven decades ago. Today, that service continues with delivery available across the entire city — and even to far-reaching locations. Cantor's, the home of quality meats, has delivered its products for many years to customers in remote communities in Northern Manitoba, Northwestern Ontario and all the way up to Nunavut. "We're different than a chain store. We offer a different kind of customer service. That's what I was taught," says Ed Cantor, who represents the third generation involved in the family business. "For me, I started coming to work when I was about 14 years old after school and on the weekends. I have a younger brother and two older sisters, and we all worked here when we were growing up to make money. But they didn't have a passion for it, so I'm the only one who's still here." Their father Joseph taught them the importance of standing behind their customers, both in good times and in lean times. "My dad took the Milk Control Board to court back in the early '80s because you couldn't sell milk below a certain price back in the old days. He fought them and he won, so now you can sell milk at a lower price. My dad changed things. He liked to fight for what was best for his customers," Cantor says. "He also fought the fish marketing board. Nobody ever told him he needed a licence to sell pickerel, so conservation officers came and took our fish away. He fought it and he got his fish back — and they apologized. He was always after the marketing boards because he believed they overcharged for everything and didn't give back. He was feisty, he was a good businessman, and he cared about his customers." Currently, Cantor's Meats operates with a staff of about 44 employees, who are dedicated to providing the best possible experience for their customers. At the same time, the community-minded company takes pride in opportunities to give back. "We help out with a lot of community functions and a lot of projects to help low- income families. Organizations close to Cantor's are Ma Mawi Centre, Canadian Cancer Society and Lighthouse Mission," Cantor says. "Actually, they're trying to get a street here named after us because we've done so much for this area and this community." To celebrate the company's 75th anniversary, Cantor's Meats is inviting the community to come out and enjoy a barbecue party on Saturday, Sept. 22 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 1445 Logan Ave. The meal will include a hot dog, drink and Old Dutch chips, available by donation with all proceeds going to the Canadian Cancer Society. Each year, Cantor's Meats hosts a fundraising barbecue that brings in thousands of dollars for the cause. At this year's celebration, one lucky winner will go home with a Napoleon Rogue barbecue from Luxe Barbeque Company. "Everyone is invited to attend," Cantor says. "We look forward for the chance to enjoy the afternoon with our customers and our community." Looking ahead, Cantor is not sure what the future will hold for the family business, but he's determined to help it reach its centennial celebration. "I have two kids. My daughter is 28 and she's a lawyer. She wants to keep it in the family, but she doesn't want to do it herself. My son is in med school in Ireland and he is going to be a doctor," he says. "We'll see what happens. We'll try to make it another 25 years so that we can reach our 100th anniversary." ❚ CELEBRATING 75 YEARS OF QUALITY Cantor's Meats connects with community To celebrate the company's 75th anniversary, Cantor's Meats is inviting the community to come out and enjoy a barbecue party on Saturday, Sept. 22 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 1445 Logan Ave. The meal will include a hot dog, drink and Old Dutch chips, available by donation with all proceeds going to the Canadian Cancer Society.
