EASY DOES IT — Cont'd from page 55 (Though Hrycyna doesn't recommend completely paving over paradise — weeds can germinate pretty much anywhere, and too many rocks can tip the scales from laid-back to barren.) "There's still an amount of greenspace that's required. It's the greenery that anchors it, and the greenery that brings it to life." To that end, Hrycyna suggests rock gardens be accented with ground cover such as hearty sedums, potentillas and barberries, all of which can thrive with limited water and semi-occasional upkeep. She's also an advocate of perennial gardens and clusters of unfussy shrubs, ideally resistant to both pests and extreme climate conditions. Overall, if the endgame is less time spent watering, trimming and pruning, informal designs (think curved lines and irregular shapes) are more forgiving, incorporating naturally occurring elements such as rocks and native grasses for a wilder, more lived-in effect. And when it comes to lawn replacements, you can never go wrong with beds of that old standby, mulch — which often does double duty as a soil-enriching fertilizer while retaining moisture and suppressing the spread of weeds. Whether clients hope to convert a thirsty lawn into an easy-care oasis, or clear out space for favourite family activities, Hrycyna says they're often surprised by the colour palettes and textures available to them. As with any landscaping project, she recommends enlisting an expert's help — not just to determine the ideal selection and placement of plants, but also to ensure low-maintenance makeovers leave time for high-intensity enjoyment. "We listen to their stories," she says. "When you're putting a garden in for someone, you have to listen to what their lifestyle is, and tailor the design specifically to their lifestyle." AND WHEN IT COMES TO LAWN REPLACEMENTS, YOU CAN NEVER GO WRONG WITH BEDS OF THAT OLD STANDBY, MULCH… Fully Serviced Country Estate Lots Average Lot Size of 80' by 200' Large Lake, Parks and Paths Lake lots Available with Walk Out or Look Out No City of Winnipeg Growth Fee Low Property Taxes Choose Any Builder or Pick from our Participating Builders Minutes to the City Safe and Prestigious East St. Paul Community Quiet Rural Lifestyle (204) 955-6003 www.bytheparkdevelopment.com Darryl Chatyrbok Key-Move Realty Ltd darryl@keymoverealty.com NOW SELLING PHASE I & II LOTS!
