>> Window dressing isn't what it used to be. Fussy fabrics have given way to simple, clean lines in window treatments that require minimal care — and minimal effort to operate. "Most soft window coverings are made of polyester fabrics that do not attract dust and pet hair like ordinary blinds did in the past," says Tracy Fiorillo, general manager of Superblinds and Draperies. There have also been new developments in quality- of-life features, including blackout shades that help to create better sleeping conditions in the bedroom. "Modern-style coverings these days offer many benefits, such as energy efficiency, UV protection, pet and child safety and home automation, including Wi-Fi technology," Fiorillo says. Blind Ambitions owner Jon Siddall says the selection of styles has grown by leaps and bounds since he started the business more than 28 years ago. And as motorization has become more common, the variety of operating systems has expanded, as well. Automated systems can be hardwired, battery- operated, or plugged into an electrical outlet. "With the proper app, the blinds can be operated from a cellphone or tablet from anywhere," Siddall says. "They can also work on a timer or sun sensor that will raise or lower the blinds at certain times of the day, or when the sun is hitting the window. The power of these motorized systems can be augmented with a small solar panel that attaches right to the window glass." Every generation has its own preferences, even when it comes to window coverings. Younger homeowners tend to love the clean, minimal look of roller shades, says Debby Ryan-Hobbs, interior designer for Blinds are Beautiful. "This product is so advanced, with literally hundreds of beautiful fabrics. They are up for maximum light and view and down at night for privacy."
