C onsequently, when it came time to attend a career symposium, you ap- proached it as just another day-long field trip. Not surprisingly β€” teens being teens β€” today's crop of high-schoolers takes a similar approach to life, where the future can wait. That's an approach high schools are trying to change, says Adriano Magnifico, career and entrepreneurship counsellor for Louis Riel School Division (LRSD). "We're working hard at making it all relevant β€” that it's important to have a plan before you go to a career symposium. We don't want students to go to the symposium, look around and think, 'I'm here in a big room with all these booths. Now, what do I do?'" Magnifico says high schools are taking a pro- active approach in preparing students for the three-day event, which will be held at the RBC Convention Centre Winnipeg, March 11-13. "In our case (LRSD), we're using myblueprint. ca, a Canadian-based website that offers prod- ucts and services that empower students to make informed choices about their future. We use it to help students do some pre-thinking prior to the event. That preparation is a couple of hours well-spent." Their thinking stimulated, high-schoolers from grade nine to 12 come ready to explore the Think back to when you were a teenager attending high school. Back then, life was good. You attended class, played sports, hung out with friends and lived life in the moment. You didn't think much about the future because you were too busy living in the moment. 02 | 22ND ROTARY CAREER SYMPOSIUM There will be lots of hands- on activities designed to pique the interest of attendees.
