Take a stand, or take a seat, at one of these events The United Nations celebrated International Women's Day for the first time in 1975, but its history dates back to the early 1900s, when women's rights movements were gaining momentum in Europe and North America. In 1916, women in Manitoba won the right to vote and to hold seats in the provincial government, becoming the first in Canada to do so. In 1919, women were on the battle lines in the Winnipeg General Strike. Over the ensuing years, they've continued to fight for gender equity in the workplace and in society at large, scoring human rights victories for the benefit of the greater community. Gains have been made, but recent history has taught us that complacency is perilous. Today, women and men around the world are contributing to a renewed momentum, and you're invited to join in.
