Downtown >> Kristen and Gail Walker didnt just change their address when they moved downtown, they changed their lifestyle for the better. Downsizing from a four-bedroom bungalow in St. Vital to a onebedroom condo in an East Exchange heritage building gave them a streamlined living space, expanded their entertainment options and drastically altered their daily commute. It simplified our life immensely, Kristen says. We can walk to work. Were living a pedestrian lifestyle. We walk every Sunday morning to breakfast, so weve picked different breakfast spots throughout downtown every Sunday morning so far. Waterfront Park is handy for walks with their dog Baxter, and living in StreetSide Development Corp.s District Condos at 110 James St. makes catching a show or sporting event far more convenient. They bought season tickets for Winnipeg Goldeyes baseball games at Shaw Park. They may subscribe to Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre next season and theyve discovered its mighty convenient for music lovers to live right behind the Centennial Concert Hall. They did a holiday show at the end of December and we walked over, we saw the show and before people were even getting through coat check we were already at home drinking a glass of wine, Ms. Walker says. I couldnt believe it it took us five minutes. Exchange District Biz Executive Director Brian Timmerman says the areas historic flavour and proximity to workplaces, theatres, nightclubs and restaurants are major draws for new residents, who tend to be young professionals or empty nesters.
