As much as we think we like change,
the reality is that we are all creatures of habit.
Take the rules of golf, for example. Back in 2012, golf's governing bodies – the
United States Golf Association (USGA) and Royal & Ancient Club of St. An-
drews (R & A) – embarked upon the unenviable task of revising the rules with
the goal of making them more user-friendly and less punitive.
Finally, after seven years of painstaking work, the new rules were rolled out in
January of this year. The roll-out – much to the horror of the USGA and R & A
– was anything but seamless.
Although many of the changes appeared straightforward – key changes in-
cluded dropping from knee height instead of shoulder height, being permitted
to leave the flagstick in while putting on the green and reducing search time
for a lost ball from three to five minutes – they turned out to be anything but.
