Red River College's R-Crew-students helping students One of the ways Red River College supports its Aboriginal s t u d e n t s is through our student group called the R-Crew (resource crew). The R-Crew is a valuable part of our college c o m m u n i t y. Students work as a team to get involved in the Aboriginal Support Centre by supporting other students and offering a realistic view of the challenges and potential solutions from their own experiential frame of reference. At the end of the yearlong commitment, R-Crew members have gained the confidence and ambition to complete their academic studies in addition to valuable and marketable skills needed for job readiness. They can then advance to the next step in their career and to be proud of who they are, strong Aboriginal graduates. Here is a quote from a past R-Crew member: Joining the R-crew was an easy decision for me. I had already started attending the events hosted at the Aboriginal Student Center and was looking for a way that I could become more involved. Being part of the R-crew allowed me to develop my skills and mingle with fellow students at the same time. From helping to organize feasts and family fun nights, to participating on national panels and cultural events, all these opportunities collectively helped complete my experience at Red River. I would have regretted not getting the chance to get work with the great staff here at RRC, they're always there whether you are looking for a helping hand or someone to laugh with and these people are fantastic! The R-crew helped me develop my skill set which makes me feel more prepared to venture out in the work world. I now have experience and knowledge in event planning, human resources and project management. I would definitely recommend joining the R-crew; it's a memorable experience and a fantastic opportunity that should not be passed up! -Amber Finnbogason, R-crew member 2011-12 One of the biggest reasons why I enjoy working for Red River College as the supervisor of R-Crew is seeing students accomplish their goals and helping them discover their own potential not to mention their increased self-esteem and self-identity. It makes me proud to watch each student grow personally, spiritually and professionally as role models to their peers, family and community.
