More than five years after the former NDP government introduced a New Home Warranty Act that would require all new homes sold in Manitoba to be covered by a third-party warranty, the province scrapped the act last spring. However, that doesn't mean Manitoba's home buyers are left high and dry. It just means they should exercise due diligence when choosing a reputable builder. MHBA members continue to carry third-party warranty coverage on all new homes they build — it's a mandatory requirement for membership. Warranties cover any defects in materials, design and structural components and are typically arranged for by the builder. When you buy or build a new home, ask about the warranty, and make sure you're protected. ARE YOU COVERED? In contrast to the white cabinetry and countertops, the island has a black base, with generous seating adjacent to the dining area. Multi-toned stone feature walls in the foyer and great-room add warmth and rustic charm, and the artfully designed entertainment centre has several more attractive details, framed in grey slab tile and anchored by a row of rich wooden cubbies, with open shelving on one side and a ribbon fireplace on the other. An abundance of windows gives the entire house a wide-open, airy atmosphere that even extends to the spacious master suite's walk-in closet. And the roomy master en suite is dripping with style, with a square-edged freestanding bathtub set against a sophisticated grey tile ledge and feature wall — a decorative element that's carried over to the centre of the glass-enclosed walk-in shower. That shower is built for two, by the way, as is the double vanity, set on a base of black cabinetry with a white countertop that mirrors the kitchen island. The house is also big on storage throughout. Along with the built- in mudroom feature, every bedroom has a walk-in closet and there's another one in the foyer, behind a white, sliding barn door with on-trend black hardware — another mirror image that's identical to the door on the master en suite.
