Lower Fort Garry National Historic Site Visit Lower Fort Garry – Where HistorY is repeated >>Lower Fort Garry National Historic Site of Canada —More than 180 years of history is preserved at Lower Fort Garry, the lovingly restored fort built to house the Hudson's Bay Company's fur-trade operations in the 1830s. A trade and social hub for trappers, Ojibway and Swampy Cree First Nations, voyageurs and pioneers, the fort later served as a penitentiary, a Northwest Mounted Police training centre and an asylum. Constructed from local limestone, the oldest stone fort in North America was built to withstand the test of time. Its original residences and imposing walls are still standing — and if they could talk, they'd have thrilling tales to tell about life in the Red River Valley. Open year round for tours, events and weddings, the fort is still bustling in the summer months. www.parkscanada.gc.ca/garry. M u s e u m s Events a Year & alive! 200 H i s to r y i tos hcsmery o 63
