Generosity changes everything Over the past century, people of all ages and backgrounds have – often in vain – searched for ways to optimize their health. As longtime professionals in the health care and wellness industries, Erica Henderson and Melina Elliott were looking for a way to help people live longer, healthier lives. Paired together for the last six years on a longitudinal health research study at the University of Manitoba, they had a brainwave in February 2018. "I'd been doing DEXA scans on study subjects to determine their bone density," recalls Henderson. "It occurred to us that there was a gap in services, that a service that gave people insight into their body composition would be a great idea. We knew the service was happening in other parts of the world, so we thought, 'Why not Winnipeg?' " After receiving approval from Manitoba Health, Henderson and Elliott opened their new business, Body Measure, in July 2018. The clinic is located at 1086 St. Mary's Rd. "In a nutshell, we perform body scans that give us a blueprint of your body," Elliott says. "They tell us how much visceral (internal) and subcutaneous (external) fat you have, as well as muscle mass in your core, arms and legs. It's a pretty cool process." There are three types of scans to choose from: Fit 3D scan, RMR scan and DEXA scan. "The Fit 3D scan is a super- precise tape measure of your body that provides us with a complete head-to-toe snapshot of your body, while the hospital-grade RMR scan measures your resting metabolic rate," Elliott says. "It analyzes your oxygen output and tells us how many calories you burn at rest." Finally, there's the DEXA scan. "It's a comprehensive body scan that provides us with three images of your body: skeleton, body fat and muscle and soft tissue," Henderson explains. "Body Measure is the only place in the province where this scan can be done." Once viewed by Henderson – she's a certified X-Ray technologist, as well as a fitness instructor/trainer – the body blueprint is utilized to formulate a personalized wellness plan. "After the scan, we provide an in- depth consultation that involves setting out a plan on how a client wants to achieve health goals," says Elliott, who has a Master of Science in community health. To date, Body Measure has helped more than 1,500 clients achieve their goals and lead healthier – and much happier – lives. "The past year and a half has been an incredible ride," she adds. "It's been just the best feeling to be able provide a service that helps people turn their health around. We've had clients thank us for changing their lives." ■ A REAL LIFE-SAVER BODY MEASURE Melina Elliott (left) and Erica Henderson launched Body Measure in July 2018 with a goal of helping people to live happier and healthier lives.
