04 23RD ROTARY CAREER SYMPOSIUM 2020 Rotary Career Symposium Speakers 10:30 a.m. LOCATION: Millennium Suite SPEAKER: Kate Garinger, Physiotherapist TOPIC: Physiotherapy ABOUT THE SPEAKER: Kate Garinger is a physiotherapist at Healthview Therapy Centre. She obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in 2012 and a Master of Physical Therapy degree in 2016, both from the University of Manitoba. As a physiotherapist, she helps people recover from musculoskeletal injuries and return to function. LOCATION: 2E SPEAKER: Dean Smallwood, Principal, Bounce Design TOPIC: Graphic Designer, Entrepreneurship ABOUT THE SPEAKER: Dean Smallwood is the jack-of-all-trades principal owner of Bounce Design, who keeps the wheels turning as project and office manager. Dean will speak about his unique career journey and the business of graphic design. It's not always about pretty pictures. LOCATION: 2F SPEAKER: Buetta Warkentin TOPIC: Social Work ABOUT THE SPEAKER: Professor Buetta Warkentin has been a teaching faculty member in the social work program at Booth University College for 14 years. Buetta will discuss the various roles social workers play in making a difference in the lives of those in need in our society. LOCATION: 2G SPEAKER: Fauna Kingdon, CPA, CA, MPACC, CAFM First Nations Financial Management Board TOPIC: Accounting ABOUT THE SPEAKER: Raised in Iqaluit, Nunavut, Fauna Kingdon is Manitoba Métis and the only Indigenous Chartered Accountant in her 2009 graduating class. She is one of the few Indigenous Chartered Professional Accountants (CPA) in Canada. Kingdon has also earned her Certified Aboriginal Financial Manager (CAFM) designation. She currently sits on the Board of Directors of Indspire and was a panellist on the Indspire Canada 150 Tour. LOCATION: 2H SPEAKER: Christa Simard, Panache Management TOPIC: Modelling Agencies & Management LOCATION: Pan Am Room *March 17 SPEAKER: Tyler Magz, Virgin Radio Winnipeg 103.1 TOPIC: Radio & Broadcasting ABOUT THE SPEAKER: Tyler Magz, a.k.a. "Manila Ice," is the huge personality behind the afternoon drive at 103.1 Virgin Radio Winnipeg. Whether he's spinning the "Top 5 at 5" or interviewing Camila Cabello, Tyler brings a fun, energetic vibe to Winnipeg's No. 1 hit music station. He's emceed various events in the city including the Young Humanitarian Awards and the Our Manitoba Heroes Gala, and loves helping out within the Filipino community in Winnipeg. LOCATION: Pan Am Room *March 18 SPEAKER: DJ Blitz, Virgin Radio Winnipeg 103.1 TOPIC: Radio & Broadcasting ABOUT THE SPEAKER: DJ Blitz is a radio personality at Winnipeg's No. 1 Hit Music Station 103.1 Virgin Radio, a DJ and a social media influencer. Born and raised in Winnipeg, DJ Blitz has always loved interacting with people. When not at the studio, you can often find Blitz out taking part in community events, visiting schools and playing at the hottest clubs in the city. LOCATION: Presentation Theatre SPEAKER: Liem Nguyen, Pixel Reborn TOPIC: Animation ABOUT THE SPEAKER: Liem Nguyen is an Emmy award-winner for Outstanding Graphic Design for Super Bowl XXXVII in 2003 and for MLB Tonight in 2015. He was also nominated for an Emmy for Outstanding Graphic Design for the show packaging of Monday Night Football in 2006. He has won numerous other awards in the field of animation. Nguyen has collaborated with other artists on a variety of projects including visual effects for feature films Superman Returns, The Core and The Matrix Reloaded, and for animated children's shows such as Henry's World. Nguyen has also worked on video game cinematics for Ghost Recon 2 and Need For Speed. 11:30 a.m. LOCATION: Millennium Suite SPEAKER: Tanis Ostermann TOPIC: Environmental Specialist ABOUT THE SPEAKER: Tanis Ostermann is an Environmental Professional, certified through the Canadian Environmental Certification Approvals Board, and is a trained EMS Lead Auditor. Ostermann has a Bachelor of Science in environmental toxicology and a Master of Environment focusing on the use of existing, well-functioning management systems to enhance corporate sustainability performance. With over 20 years of experience in the fields of environmental and sustainability management system development and improvement, she has led the development of corporate management systems and associated improvement initiatives. LOCATION: 2E SPEAKER: Chris Schmidt, Geofilter Studio & Pluto Ventures TOPIC: The Tech World & Entrepreneurship ABOUT THE SPEAKER: Chris Schmidt is founder of the world's first Snapchat filter company, Geofilter Studio. The company has created over 100,000 filters that have been viewed over five billion times. Along with Geofilter Studio, Schmidt's company EveryStudio houses two other brands: EveryStudio AR and EveryStudio Stickers. Schmidt's next venture, Pluto Ventures, is focused on machine learning. Schmidt will speak about entrepreneurship in the tech field. LOCATION: 2F *March 17 SPEAKER: Karl Roberts TOPIC: Automotive Technologist LOCATION: 2F *March 18 SPEAKER: Lindsay Langridge TOPIC: Automotive Technologist ABOUT THE SPEAKER: Lindsay Langridge is the Reconditioning Manager at Birchwood Reconditioning Centre. She started with Birchwood five years ago as a collision consultant and worked her way up to managing a wide variety of employees at the reconditioning facility. Lindsay hires everyone from entry-level workers such as detailers up to Red Seal-certified technicians. She works with production and knows what it takes to be successful in the fixed-operation side of automotive industry. LOCATION: 2G *March 17 SPEAKER: Danielle Ariano B.Sc. CAT © Certified Athletic Therapist TOPIC: Athletic Therapy ABOUT THE SPEAKER: Danielle Ariano is a certified Athletic Therapist who graduated from Concordia University in 2014 and worked in Montreal until 2018. Danielle currently works at Total Rehab on Corydon Avenue for assessment and treatment of general population clients as well as with all levels of athletes. She also works with Providence College and Judo Manitoba. The Rotary Career Symposium brings together some of the most engaged speakers in their respective fields to share "day in the life" stories with attendees. Speakers engage students and career-seekers with extensive knowledge of what it's like to work in their industries, the challenges they face and the rewards they reap.
