When the toys are out, a shed with a window and a screen door makes a cool place to have a tea party. Store toys and more at the end of the day and adults can wake up to a tidy yard for coffee in the morning. See free playhouse plans at thesprucecrafts.com for inspiration. A half-door invites puppet shows. Brighten it inside and out with solar lights. Get the kids to help create a little flower or vegetable garden for the shed (include wee treehouses and outbuildings for the fairy folk!). Remember the She-shed trend of a few years back? Consider converting a shed into a playhouse for grownups — you'll find ideas for bars, yoga studios, outdoor offices and more at lowes.com. Hang a water feature on a wall or fence and surround it with plants, or go for broke and dig a small pond. Even a table-top fountain with a couple of potted plants will create a soothing trickle. Invite birds, butterflies and other friendly critters into your yard with feeders and a bird bath (add a few small stones or sticks so bees have a safe place to land). If you've got chipmunks scurrying around, they'll entertain you for the price of a few sunflower seeds. Bughouses attract pollinators and a hummingbird feeder welcomes flying gems. Plant easy-to-grow scarlet runner beans under the feeder. The red flowers help hummers find the feeder and they'll dip their beaks into the bean blooms. Get a good birdwatching book and keep track of your visitors by playing a summer-long game of backyard birdie bingo, or go online to identify your visitors at whatbird.com. Consider planting flowers and veggies in raised garden beds that are easy on your knees. Just remember, if they are set against a wall, you need to be able to reach all the way to back, so don't make them too deep. If they're freestanding, you should be able to reach to the middle of the bed from either side. Commercial table- top gardens are available, but you can also throw a tarp onto a table and put window boxes and flower pots on top. Enjoy More Flora and Fauna create an inviting space STEP 3
