"Think about the number of things in your home that are electronic. You stand to cover a huge loss if you have electronic arcing that fries your electronics." As the needs of homeowners advance, so does the insurance industry. T.J. McRedmond, president of Crossroads Insurance, recommends reviewing your policy every year to confirm you're taking full advantage of the coverage available to you and that you're aware of any potential discounts. "A lot of changes can happen in a year," says McRedmond. "From having a baby, to working from home, to doing home improvements — these changes should be recorded so we can adjust your insurance accordingly." If you replace your furnace or roof, or install a home-security system, for instance, those improvements could qualify you for a discount. Some companies offer mature-citizen and claims-free discounts as well. "People tend to focus on the premium and that's understandable, as we all have a budget," says McRedmond. "But, your home is often the biggest investment you'll ever make. You have to take the time to make sure you know your options at the end of the day."
