Celebrating
Indigenous
Student Success
This spring, 582 Indigenous students—the largest cohort ever—
were honoured for their achievements at the University of Manitoba.
UM includes a dynamic community of more than 2,500 First Nations,
Métis and Inuit students and thousands of Indigenous alumni, including
outstanding leaders like Ininiw graduate Dr. Stewart Hill.
After graduating with a master's degree from UM's Natural Resources
Institute, Stewart spent two decades as a research consultant
before returning to UM. In early 2021, he defended his thesis in
natural resources and environmental management–the first person
to complete a PhD from his community of God's Lake First Nation.
Stewart is now a senior research and policy analyst at Manitoba
Keewatinowi Okimakanak and continues to share his knowledge(s).
He encourages Indigenous students to connect with their cultures
and communities to guide them in their studies: "Always think about
your culture and where you came from, where your people came
from and who you are."
Congratulations to Dr. Stewart Hill and all of the Indigenous
graduates at UM!
