The desire for refuge from working, studying and socializing under the same roof has us examining the underutilized areas of our homes. Enter — the garage! Typically, a utilitarian space, the garage can provide that additional square footage to create a bonus area in your home. Meditation rooms, home gyms, extra work zones, a recreation space for teenage kids, a library or even a greenhouse are just some of the ways you can create an extra area to discover refuge in your home. These new spaces may even help us achieve be er mental health. With this in mind, we have considered a five-step process that leads to a successfully planned and executed garage design project. 1. IMAGINE IT • Think outside the box! Let yourself dream of the possibilities — even if that dream involves more than a few functions. • Consider what makes sense for your life and family. 2. EVALUATE IT • What space is available? • Measure it. • Be realistic with your budget and time frame. • Consider reusing currently owned items to achieve your design goal. 3. PLAN IT • Hire a professional designer to help you (they know the tips and tricks). • Consult the building codes. • Ensure there is adequate fresh air/ ventilation. • Address your infrastructure. Keep extra power needs top of mind. (Consult a good electrician.) • Consider the overall climate. Insulation, exterior doors and heating/cooling are key to garage design. • Incorporate great lighting. • Storage is also key. Refuges fail to soothe when they're messy. • Let's not ignore beauty. You want to create a space that you'll enjoy using. 4. BUILD IT • Hire professionals. DIY may be good for painting a baby room, but the garage has unique issues to consider. • Be realistic with your project's time frame. Complicated designs take longer to complete than straightforward designs. 5. ENJOY IT • After following the four tips, you've created a unique, flexible and enjoyable garage space for you and your family. • It's your refuge, so it's time to embrace and share it!
