Junior Achievement Manitoba (JAM) president and CEO Greg Leipsic says the event aimed at raising both funds and JAM's profile was a success on both counts. "We had about 400 people (and) raised over $120,000. It was phenomenal," Leipsic says. The hall of fame will be housed in the new World Trade Centre Winnipeg. Junior Achievement of Canada established the Canadian Business Hall of Fame in 1979, and it has already inducted all six of the first Manitoba hall of fame honourees. All deceased, they were leaders in entrepreneurship on a national level. The inductees are: >> I.H. (Izzy) Asper: Lawyer, politician and media mogul who built an empire that included the Global Television Network and the CanWest newspaper chain. >> James Armstrong Richardson Sr.: Winnipeg's airport is named for the business and aviation pioneer, who founded Western Canadian Airlines. As president of James Richardson & Sons, he moved the grain company's head office to Winnipeg in 1923. >> Muriel Richardson: The first woman at the helm of a major Canadian company, she became president of James Richardson & Sons when her husband James died in 1939. >> Samuel Bronfman: Founder of the Distillers Corp., forerunner to the Seagram Co. >> Albert Cohen: Co-founder of General Distributors (Gendis Inc.) in 1939, Cohen introduced the Sony transistor radio and Paper-Mate pens to Canada in the 1950s and branched into the retail business with SAAN, Metropolitan, Greenberg and Pomme Rouge (Red Apple) chains. Three other Manitobans who are already in the national hall of fame will be inducted into the Manitoba hall next year. They are Gerald Schwartz, David Culver and Ian David Sinclair. Since 1963, JAM has partnered with educators, donors and volunteers to bring real-world experience into the classroom. Students in grades 3 - 12 in more than 150 schools throughout Manitoba can take part in five free programs. Leipsic says about 6,000 students took part in JAM programs during the 2012-13 school year, with about 200 volunteers from the business community.
