around town celebrating innovation The Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce fourth annual Spirit of Winnipeg Awards saluted charities, businesses and services whose creative practices contribute to our city's vibrancy. Co-founded by BDO Chartered Accountants and Advisers, and presented with Fillmore Riley LLP, the 2013 awards recognized innovation in business in six categories. The recipients: NEW & NOTEWORTHY CHARITY >> Junior Chamber International (JCI) Winnipeg celebrates its 90th anniversary in 2013. As the oldest JCI chapter in Canada, it was chosen to host JCI Canada's Western Regional Conference June 14 - 16. Delegates from across the country were invited to network, enjoy a 1920s-themed gala dinner and take part in the annual effective speaking competition. The non-profit organization provides opportunities for young people to develop leadership, fellowship, social responsibility and entrepreneurial skills. >> Variety, the Children's Charity of Manitoba: Offering support to many other children's organizations, Variety engages in unique fundraising projects, and partnered with Parks Canada to open the Variety Heritage Adventure Park at The Forks. >> Finalists: Resource Assistance for Youth Inc. and Ronald McDonald House Manitoba. >> World Trade Centre Winnipeg, the Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce and the Manitoba Chambers of Commerce hosted a luncheon and seminar on June 26 to explain how Manitoba companies can tap into opportunities in the oil and gas industries in Montana and North Dakota. NOT-FOR-PROFIT >> The Half Moon Drive In is footing the bill for a two-day soiree to celebrate its 75th anniversary July 13 - 14 in Lockport. Hot dogs are on the house and half a dozen bands perform at two concerts Saturday and Sunday. >> International Institute for Sustainable Development: By harvesting and processing cattails, IISD has been able to produce bioenergy, reduce nutrient loading to waterways, recover high-value phosphorous for fertilizer and improve habitat. >> Finalists: Career Internship Program, Louis Riel School Division and Winnipeg Folk Festival. >> The La Salle & Area Chamber of Commerce held its second annual Home & Life Show at the Kingswood Golf & Country Club April 13. The event was a success for 26 exhibitors. Many businesses made sales on site and had opportunities to network with potential clients. The chamber is planning to expand the event next year. START-UP BUSINESS >> Po-motion Inc.: Po-motion's owners never intended to start a business. A YouTube video that went viral had people from around the world asking them for interactive projection solutions. The software they developed allows users to create their own interactive surfaces using any projector, computer and web camera. >> Finalists: 365 Technologies Inc. and Metis Economic Development Organization. SMALL BUSINESS >> La Liberté: In 2013, La Liberté celebrates 100 years as Western Canada's oldest French newspaper. In 2009, it created an advertising cell, which produces content for special inserts in the newspaper. It has since added graphic design services and web support for client websites. >> Finalists: 1 Life Workplace Safety & Health Ltd. and IMT Infomagnetics Technologies Corp. MEDIUM BUSINESS >> Number TEN Architectural Group: Actively involved in the renaissance of downtown Winnipeg through such projects as the University of Winnipeg urban campus, Number TEN is also the first architectural firm in Winnipeg to adopt 3D printing, a process of making three-dimensional solid objects from a digital model. >> Finalists: Manitoba Harvest Hemp Foods and Pinnacle. Manitoba's pork industry means: 1.5 billion $ in export sales annually and 13,000 jobs in Manitoba Manitoba's pork industry is one of our strongest economic engines. LARGE BUSINESS >> Emterra Environmental: Started in 1976, Emterra leads the Canadian waste and resource-recovery industry.
