w An 84-year-old woman, centre, who was discharged from a hospital in the middle of the conflict in Ukraine sits with others at House of Hope, a seniors' home run by MCC partner Kharkiv Independent ECB Churches (KECB). Some 80 per cent of the population has left Kharkiv and the area around it, but vulnerable people like the elderly and disabled are unable to flee. The names of the people pictured are not provided for security reasons. Photo courtesy of KECB WHY DO PEOPLE LEAVE HOME? Birhor became a migrant worker at the age of 15 so that his family could eat more than one meal a day. For many years, he awaited the few rainy summer monsoon months when he could go home, farm his land and be with his family. When MCC's local partner Church's Auxiliary for Social Action (CASA) offered Birhor agricultural training, he was able to multiple his yields and diversify crops so that he no longer needed to migrate for work. In November 2020, Hurricanes Eta and Iota destroyed their home. The family received MCC funded supplies to rebuild and, one year later, they had a new home with a zinc roof to keep them dry. Climate change is impacting people's safety and livelihoods in Central America. Disasters like hurricanes force people to evacuate quickly. They may not be able to return for a long time or at all. In 2020, the official number of internally displaced people in Burkina Faso nearly doubled, leading the United Nations to identify this as one of the fastest growing displacement crises in the world. The displacement crisis has reached a staggering milestone Today, there are more people than ever before displaced from their homes by conflict, drought, flooding and other disasters. The UNHCR recently reported upwards of 100 million displaced people worldwide.* The number has risen at an alarming rate over the past year, propelled by the war in Ukraine, new waves of violence and ongoing conflicts in places like Ethiopia, Afghanistan and the Democratic Republic of Congo. * United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees' Press Release, 23 May 2022 Support MCC's response to displacement • at donate.mcccanada.ca and • advocate for locally led peacebuilding responses to address the root causes at mcccanada.ca/give-peace-a-chance G5 S U P P L E M E N T T O T H E W I N N I P E G F R E E P R E S S | S A T U R D A Y , J U N E 1 8 , 2 0 2 2 TallGrass - Ad Winnipeg Free Press • 3.375 w x 9 h (inches), Colour June, 2022 • Job # TallGrass-2022-Ad-13-FP-MCC The Buzz Communications Group: Vienna Badiuk 204-477-9377 Technical concerns: call Brian Hydesmith 204-487-0067 30-May-2022 tallgrassbakery.ca Thank you MCC for helping refugees find refuge Use this QR Code to learn more about MCC, read other great stories of support, or to donate.
