Scope, budget and design are in the works so now you need to start think- ing about who you would like to construct your project. Much like your design professional, allow time to meet with and interview various builders and general contractors. Many companies specialize in cer- tain areas of construction, such as new builds, renovations or restora- tion projects. Ensure that you are comfortable with the contractor and their team. • Keep in mind that many contrac- tors have often set start dates far in advance. Start interviewing contractors at least a season before you would like to start construction. • This will also allow for items such as permi ing and ordering long lead items, products and materials. 3 THE DESIGN • Allow yourself time to interview various designers. You want to ensure that you are both on the same page and have similar expectations for the desired outcome. • Many design studios have current project commitments and can have wait lists that can range from a few months to half a year. • Again, depending on the scope of the project, the timelines can vary but once the design process has started, allot for about six months. The inte- rior design professional will guide you through the design phases: • Programming • Schematic design • Design development • Construction drawings • Bidding • Many full-service interior designers will also provide services for budget- ing and contractor bidding. Discuss these items with your design team in the early stages to find out what services are best for your project. Home Renovations – Part One: Planning Many full-service interior designers will also provide services for budgeting and contractor bidding. Continued from page 9 4 THE PROJECT TEAM
