POH For its part, the MHBA's Parade of Homes has become an excellent source of inspiration. It grew out of similar events held in various locales during its first four decades. In Windsor Park, Cherry Crescent saw a flurry of activity in September 1957. Show homes were open for a week of displays during National Home Week, and Quality Homes — now Qualico — took on a challenge to build a house in 24 hours. With a pre-built basement and a team of some 200 men, it finished the job in 19 hours, 10 minutes. Similar events were held over the next few decades, but it wasn't until 1981 that the MHBA mounted the first Parade of Homes as we know it today. A dozen builders entered 29 homes, which attracted 7,000 visits. Quite a feat of optimism, considering mortgage rates of 18% were the average that year. Builders and buyers have seen hard times, good times and great times over the past 85 years. One thing that hasn't changed? Whatever its size, whatever its features and wherever you build it, there's still no place like home. Parade of Homes FALL 2022 27
