But the creation process was similar for all. From top to bottom: Clearwater Bay 2022; Horse Island 2022. Randolph Parker "Beautiful days. Calm days. Rough days. Grey days," he says. "And Randolph would come up with a very interesting composition with a great mood and atmosphere." Lake of the Woods is enormous with more than 14,000 islands, and the southern part of the lake sees very little human traffic. The adventure continued to grow, encompassing all four seasons, which required an impressive list of transportation, including Ski-Doos, motorboats and, of course, kayaks and canoes. The final landscapes — more than 260 works in all — range from large-scale acrylic paintings on canvas to smaller works on birchwood panels and water- colour sketches. But the creation process was similar for all. "I would start with a drawing, and then I take a ton of photo- graphs," Parker says. "And then I would paint them. The photos could only take me so far. They give the structure, composition and some of the details." Mayberry loved having a chance to celebrate something very dear to him. "Lake of the Woods is my favourite place in the world," he admits unreservedly. "I never get tired of it. When I study the map, I look at places I haven't been and think I'm going to go there next year." There are moments when you only get to see certain things once, and they might last for two or 20 minutes, Parker adds. For him, one day stands out. "We were up at dawn and going all day. As the day wore on, it got choppier and darker. We're both thinking, 'Our day is done.' Everything is going flat," he says. "As we motored home, the sky broke on the horizon and the sun came and lit up the shoreline beside us." Islands – Lake of the Woods runs to Dec. 24 at Mayberry Fine Art's Winnipeg galleries (212 McDermot Ave. and 2025 Corydon Ave.). The coffee-table book is available for purchase at both locations and online at mayberryfineart.com MAYBERRY FINE ART WINNIPEG CONTINUED Continued from page 11
