STONEWALL CURRENTLY BOASTS
A POPULATION OF 5,046, AND
OFFICIALS WANT TO WELCOME
MORE CITIZENS TO THEIR
VIBRANT BURG.
Smith, who often visited her grandparents in Stonewall
while growing up, not only stayed — she is now mayor
of the town 25 kilometres north of Winnipeg.
"It has that small-town feeling but filled with, quote-
unquote, big-city amenities," she says. "It has a
great sense of community, it's a safe community and
everyone kind of looks out for each other. And there's
lots to do."
Founded in 1878 as a limestone-producing centre,
Stonewall currently boasts a population of 5,046,
and officials want to welcome more citizens to their
vibrant burg.
"Lots of people that have moved here have come
here not really knowing what to expect," says Wally
Melynyk, the town's chief administrative officer.
"We hear all the time that it's a friendly community
and they're really happy to be here because of how
they're welcomed by the community."
Back in 2020, the town adopted a five-year strategic
plan that identified several priority areas of focus
— including community and economic development;
culture and recreation; and housing and growth
management.
