>> ONE DAY, somebody got wet and decided
to invent the umbrella. Inventors and entrepreneurs
are like that.
When Ruggables (ruggable.com) founder Jeneva
Bell's dog made a stinky mess that destroyed an
expensive rug, she could have bought a cheap
replacement. But Bell had a better thought: Why not
make a beautiful designer rug that could be tossed
into the washer and dryer?
Today, Bell's California-based company makes
thousands of rugs, ranging from bath mats,
doormats and hall runners all the way up to full-size
9x12 foot numbers. Water- and stain-resistant, they
can stand up to pet accidents, muddy boots and
other household perils, thanks to Bell's two-part
design — a removable, lightweight rug cover that
fits over a non-slip pad.
Buyers can choose from vintage, farmhouse
and nursery themes, or opt for funky looks from
designers like Iris Apfel and Jonathan Adler. They
can be pricey: An Iris Apfel design runs from $200
for a 2x3 foot rug up to $1,234 for the 9x12 size
($819 if you already have a rug pad). But hey,
free shipping.
