ENERGY EFFICIENCY >> LAST YEAR, Efficiency Manitoba announced a solar rebate program, offering eligible homeowners up to $5,000 and business owners up to $25,000 in rebates if they add solar photovoltaic (PV) panels to buildings that are connected to Manitoba Hydro's grid. The rebate offsets the initial cost of installation, and property owners can also expect lower energy bills. Adding solar power can offset a building's energy consumption. For homeowners, a typical system offsets about 40-60% of their consumption. Furthermore, if the system is connected to Manitoba Hydro's grid, any extra energy it produces is sold back to Manitoba Hydro at the excess-energy rate, which is adjusted each year. SAVE WITH SOLAR POWER By Kristin Marand "What many people don't realize is that systems connected to Manitoba Hydro's grid continue to receive an electricity bill — it will just be less than before as you'll be purchasing less energy from Manitoba Hydro," says Bailey Smith, energy- efficiency analyst for the Solar Rebate Program. "You'll also be able to sell excess electricity generated from your solar PV system to Manitoba Hydro and receive a credit on your energy bill." If you're interested in exploring solar power and taking advantage of the rebate program, visit efficiencymb.ca/ solar. It's a one-stop online shop, providing a wealth of information about solar PV systems, along with resources to help you choose a solar contractor and request a quote. (To qualify for a rebate, you must work with a registered solar supplier. There's a list of suppliers on the website.)
