Expert advice for
oving and decorating
are among the most
challenging aspects
of home ownership.
By the time you've unpacked that last
box or fastened the final cabinet han-
dle, you might not have the energy to
think about which couch you're going
to buy or what kind of prints you
should get for the bathroom walls.
Thankfully, there are just a few simple
things to keep in mind when it comes
to making a house a home. And the
advice of experts like Tracy Dyck,
owner and director of S3 Interior De-
sign — a local company celebrating
20 years in the business — doesn't
hurt, either.
Here, she walks us through the dos
and don'ts of decorating and furnish-
ing your new (or new to you) home.
DO: PLAN, PLAN, PLAN
"A solid plan is key," says Dyck, who
specializes in the architectural aspects
of home design. "You've got to look
at the scale size of the furniture, the
style of the furniture, making sure
things are cohesive but also making
sure they're functional. How do you
actually use your family room? Is it
adults and kids all curled up on a
sectional watching a movie, or are you
more formal and does everyone have
their own space to sit? Think about
how you live."
Start by doing a scale drawing of your
home so you can decide which size
of furniture will fit the space. Budget is
also a crucial part of the planning pro-
cess, so include the costs of the items
you need for the space.
