"They're not your standard traditional old kind of designs where you have both sides look the same or there's not a lot of square footage," explains Jason Jaquet, vice-president of Randall Homes. "When we design a duplex, we try to make each half look individually different; there's not a mirror image of the one from the other side. It gives you your own identity because, even if you are sharing a common wall and a part of a driveway, you still want to have your home look like your own." Contemporary duplex designs incorpo- rate many of the most in-demand trends, including nine-foot ceilings, modern kitchens, open-concept great rooms, oversized garages and square footage that ranges from the mid-1,400s up to 1,700 square feet. While duplexes may be narrower than some single- family detached homes, the same high-quality laminate flooring is used throughout to make it feel larger. Open-concept basements with no posts and eight-foot-six ceilings are like a painter's canvas — ready for anything. "Just because it's a side-by-side doesn't mean it can't meet your wants and needs in a new home," Jaquet says. M
