Neighbourhood Profile GENSTAR COMMUNITIES GENSTAR COMMUNITIES take root in Transcona BY JANINE LEGAL Vibrant Transcona boasts numerous attractions while also fostering a strong sense of community that's bolstered by Genstar's role in the friendly neighbourhood. or more than 70 years, Genstar has created communities known for convenience, value and commu- nity pride. Founded first by the Simkin family in Winnipeg in 1950 as BACM Industries, located in Transcona, the company was sold in 1973 to Genstar Corporation and renamed Genstar Development Company. Today, Genstar continues to operate in Winnipeg, as well as in Calgary, Edmonton, California and Atlanta. Continuing their legacy in Transcona, two new Genstar developments have taken root in the heart of Transcona — Summerlea and Devonshire Park — and they've both become sought-after locations for homebuyers of all ages and stages of life. Located about 12 kilometres from downtown, Transcona is home to more than 35,000 residents. Highlights of the bustling hub include playgrounds, splash pads, outdoor rinks, community clubs, multi-use trails and much more. "Many people think Transcona is way out there, but it is only 20 minutes by vehicle from down- town and has easy access to many of the most popular provin- cial parks and cottage areas in the province," says development manager Brock Feenstra.
