Manitoba adopts national model

When we rang in the new year, Manitoba
also jumped on board with an updated edition
of national model construction codes.
On Jan. 1, 2024, Manitoba adopted and began
enforcing the 2020 edition of the national model
for building, plumbing, energy and fire codes.
oe Kasprick, program manager of
building codes for the Province of
Manitoba, explains that the National
Research Council developed these
construction codes at a national level. These
updated construction codes are published
every five years.
"The 2020 codes became available in 2022,"
he says. "As of the summer of 2023, we passed
the regulations to adopt the 2020 codes, which
came into force Jan. 1, 2024."
Peri Maric, technical research committee chair
for Manitoba Home Builders' Association,
explains that provinces are working with the
federal government to harmonize the building
code across the country.
"This would make the code more flexible and
applicable for climate zones instead of provin

cial boundaries," Maric says.
