In 2022, the federal government of Canada released the 2020 national model codes — a new set of standards for construction encompassing building, plumbing, fire and energy codes. The national model codes outline a tiered process for energy efficiency, also referred to as a step code. Manitoba adopted Tier 1 of the step code in 2024, meaning that buildings designed and constructed must comply with the new requirements moving forward. The province will chart a course through the remaining four tiers over the next several years.
