As holidays end and school resumes, establishing good habits and routines early will get everyone off to a great start in the morning. While it has been proven that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, keeping the body and brain well nourished for optimum performance and learning, takes some planning and preparation. Packing lunches for kids or adults can pose a challenge. It is tempting to spend money on fast food options but this can become expensive and often the healthy menu choices are limited on nonexistent. Sit down with your family and involve them in a discussion of what lunches will look like throughout the week and make a shopping list. Surf the web for lunch ideas and get everyone excited about trying new or different things to keep interest. Discussing why home-made lunches are a healthier choice and save money will also teach good economic habits. Add lunch making to an evening routine where everyone should be responsible for preparing their own lunch. It will take as little as 15 minutes and can result in some quality time together. Five essential things should be considered when packing a lunch. Whole-grains and protein provide energy, fruits and veggies are nutritious, a small snack as a treat and include a healthy beverage to drink. With such a variety of bread products available, sandwiches no longer have to be drab. Pita, flat breads, submarine-style buns, Kaiser rolls and bagels give a huge variety to choose from. Choose wholegrains as they take longer to digest. Aim for sandwiches to contain a good source of protein such as turkey, chicken, beef or ham. Egg, tuna or salmon are good options as they provide protein, essential to keep concentration levels high without the distraction of hunger. Jazz up with veggies by adding lettuce, grated carrot, celery or cucumber slices. Peanut butter is still an all-time favourite but it is wise to know what the school or work policy is on nuts. Fruit provides a refreshing alternative to junk food as a snack and is a great way to kill the afternoon growlies. Slicing the fruit gives the finger food effect. Dried fruit and nut mixes, baked chips or pretzels and home-made cookies or cereal bars are also a great choice. Carrot or celery sticks are a fun way to snack, offer a crunch and can be dipped with yogurt, cottage cheese, hummus or guacamole. Offer low-fat crackers as an alternative. Break up larger bagged products into portion sizes to curb the urge to eat the entire bag or box. Throw in a few pieces of hard candy for a treat. Leftovers make a great lunch and by making a hearty portion at supper and packaging the night before for the fridge or freezer is a great way to ensure lunches are readily available. Invest in a lunch box or small cooler that is attractive and something lunch eaters want to use. Reusable containers and drink holders, suitable for freezer and microwave use, are a great way to pack refreshments. Freeze water, ice tea and other juice concentrates to keep lunches cool. As the beverages thaw, the liquid becomes a refreshing drink. For those who are portion conscious, containers are a great way to control how much you are consuming. By packing a variety of items you will not only save money but become healthier in the process. As with all new routines, they take time and practice to enforce. Falling off the wagon and doing a McD's occasionally isn't a bad thing, as this trip will become an outing and a treat. But by being diligent about packing lunches, you and your family will become healthier. - Septage receiving Sep *screening/separation *sc *discharge tracking *di - Rectangular clarifiers Rec *Chain & Flight systems *Ch *Skimming troughs *Sk 35 Elm Street, Walkerton, Ontario Ph: 800-519-7101 or 519-881-0262 Fax: 519-881-3573 Info@arlat.com / www.arlat.com Eyaa-Keen Healing Centre Inc. respectfully congratulates Mel & Shirley Chartrand! . Phone: (204) 7832976 Toll Free: 18774234648 Fax: (204) 2847292 Email: contact@eyaakeen.org Website: www.eyaakeen.org Internaonally Accredited by CARF Follow us on Mel & Shirley were presented with awards at the Keeping the Fires Burning: Honouring Balance event on June 20, 2013.
