Island Lake Races Anything that Floats You have to boat from one shore to the next, wind is blowing, waves are crashing, except to get there you can't use an actual boat. Northern Island Lake was proud to present the Anything that Floats Race on Saturday, August 10 in Garden Hill, Manitoba. The race brings skill and creativity together as teams create rafts that will beat the competition to the finish line. Teams are required to build a raft without the use of any pre-existing boat or inflatables. The boat must be human or wind powered, allowing racers to sail down the lake or Racers Compete in Garden Hill's Anything that Floats Race. paddle using oars. A total of 45 community members entered the race creating 13 teams. Store employees volunteered at several stations including the start and finish lines, canteen, barbeque, and played music. All prizes and trophies for the winners were donated by Northern Island Lake, including a Yamaha boat motor that was raffled off in support of the Canadian Diabetes Association. Spectators watched from the sidelines cheering on – and sometimes laughing at – the teams trying to make it across the lake in their makeshift boats. "It's great to see everyone's creativity, teams came together to create fun and interesting boats and costumes," added MacDonell, who hopes to hold the event next year. "People in the community have said they would love to do it again next year, we would really like to turn it into an annual event." "I would love to see the race happen again next year, it's especially great to see our children and community youth participating in local events. We thank the Northern Store for hosting this," Added Harper.
