And earlier this year, the town of Morris found itself at the centre of a media firestorm when a gay couple opted to shutter their restaurant after encountering hostility and harassment. Hesse says the chamber is well-equipped to provide resources and support to business owners facing similar challenges, and to ensure that LGBT workers are treated fairly by employers. By working to raise Manitoba's profile as an LGBT-friendly destination, the chamber can help capture an increased market share for members, while creating invaluable support systems for owners and allies from all walks of life. "There's a sense not only of camaraderie, but also that we can help each other succeed," O'Reilly says. Chamber members celebrated both their birthday and their rebirth at a business awards ceremony on Oct. 24, when they got a chance to reflect on the chamber's history and the progress made since its inception. "Certainly, there's much more legal equality and a much more inclusive community," Hesse says. "But I think the biggest success is we're now at a place where so much of the business community is openly and truly supportive and interested.
