"As employees, we really appreciate their flexible attitude," she said. "Just yesterday, I needed to stay home because both my children were sick. I was able to use a family responsibility leave day to deal with this situation. When management at Manitoba Hydro says they're family focused, they truly are." Likewise, when Hydro's management team says they're committed to providing meaningful work for their workforce, they mean that too, added Nedohin-Macek. "In my time here, I've had three very different jobs. For eight years, I was in the systems support department, then I spent one year as a cost and scheduling engineer for Hydro's Bipole III project," she said. "Currently, I'm executive assistant to the Vice-President of Transmission, doing whatever research, reports and presentations that might be needed. All three jobs have been stimulating and challenging; I've enjoyed each one. I think that's why so many people stay with Hydro, and why there are so many 20-, 30-, even 40-year veterans on staff here – people enjoy their work." Luce said it's things like being able to change careers without changing employers and strategic initiatives related to employment diversity that distinguish Manitoba Hydro from so many other organizations. "If you're motivated and driven, there's no need to leave – you can go in another career direction without leaving Hydro," he said, adding the average career length is 15 years. "I think that's why so many employees stay with us; it's a real competitive advantage. The same thing applies to our commitment to employment diversity. When you provide people with meaningful work, good long-term career opportunities and a culture that's built on health, safety, wellness and fairness, chances are good your employees will be happy, and productive."
