Some people have little open- ings for below-counter garbage. When you're cutting vegetables and things you can just push the waste directly through the countertop. "We've put fans in, we've put in all different versions of cooktops. We've done glass countertops that were underlit: It's like a polycrystal in glass and you either get coloured glass or you paint the back of the glass and you underlight the countertops. If you have that really contem- porary look in a kitchen I think it looks good." Anderstedt says a low-end granite might cost as little as $64 per square foot, but money is no ob- ject for homeowners who want the top-quality products. "When we first started doing countertops in Manitoba we really focused on value — basically the best price we could," he says. "About seven or eight years ago we said, 'Let's bring in some really high-end stone and just see what happens.' We brought in just a little bit and that really moved. Since then, every year we try to bring in 10 or so new colours that are interesting." Eco-friendly options are also popular. They include quartz countertops that contain recycled glass and, naturally, granite. "I'm a more technical person than marketing," Anderstedt says. "But I don't see how it can be any greener than a polished piece of rock. It's just a piece of the world that's brought into your house."
