"a lot of people that do have walkouts don't take the op- tion for the wood structural floor, but i always try to sell the benefits of having it because it's nice to not be walk- ing on concrete," says KDr's Vassallo. "Wood floor is more expensive, but in terms of comfort it's second to none in my mind." if the kids lay claim to the downstairs space, there are many visually pleasing and comfortable perks on the up- per end of the staircase, including a linear ribbon fireplace in the great room. "We've moved away from traditional wood fireplaces and we've gone into these sleek fireplaces in stainless steel trim," Vassallo says. Other mod-meets-cozy touches include granite kitchen counters with rustic hardwood floors, ceiling insets done in comforting blues and greens and stainless steel contrast- ing with earthy tones that "always look clean," Vassallo says.
