4 | WINNIPEG FREE PRESS PROVINCIAL ENGINEERING & GEOSCIENCE WEEK The Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Manitoba (APEGM) will offer a wide range of activities to mark Provincial EngineeringandGeoscienceWeek.Alleventswill beheldatKildonanPlaceShoppingCentre. SUNDAY AY AY AY, MARCH 9: Children'sactivities(Noonto4p.m.) The entire family can check out activities and exhibits including floating concrete, a gumdrop structure, straw bridge, balsa wood gliders, electriccircuits,andanexplorationminingpit. SATU TU TU TURDAY, MARCH 15: Spaghetti bridge competition (Grades 1-6 start at 10 a.m., Grades 7-12 begin at 12:30 p.m.) Competition open to all students (Grades 1-12) to see whose bridge will support the heaviest load. It is a fun event providing the opportunity for students, teachers, and parents to get involved in hands-on engineering. In addition to $2,000 in prize money up for grabs by students, the association has expanded the event into a fundraiser for the whole community. A donation will be made to Winnipeg Harvest equalling to the cumulative weight supported by all entries in the Winnipeg competition. Last year, the student bridges held a total of 12,305 pounds, resulting in a matching donation from Canada Safeway and Peak of the Market for a total donation of 26,915 pounds of food to Winnipeg Harvest. Booths Booths will include the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Manitoba, Manitoba Robot Games, University of Manitoba Faculty of Engineering, and the Department of Geological Services. SU SUNDAY, MARCH 16: Pasta bridge design competition (judging begins at 3:30 p.m.) In this competition, bridges are larger, and can be made of any kind of pasta, and are not tested until failure for strength. Bridges are evaluated based on creativity and technical excellence. Judging will take place Sunday afternoon and students need not be in attendance to be judged. Bridges can be dropped off beginning at 9 a.m. Saturday during the Spaghetti Bridge competition and will be put on display. In addition to the competitions, there's a host of other interesting activities planned during Provincial Engineering and Geoscience Week, including a full day of fun on both Sundays (March 9 and 16), when the whole family can come and test their mad scientific skills to float concrete, build gumdrop structures, straw bridges, balsa wood gliders, electric circuits, and discover an exploration mining pit. All activities take place at Kildonan Place Shopping Centre, which will also feature booths where visitors can learn more about APEGM, the Manitoba Robot Games, the University of Manitoba Faculty of Engineering, and the Department of Geological Services.
