Either way, wherever you go, if there are people there, they need to eat. And no matter what season it is, cooking never goes out of style! A career in the food industry can lead to employment that is secure and has plenty of opportunities to travel and experience different cultures. One of the fastest ways to break into the Manitoba restaurant and food services industry is through the Winnipeg Technical College Culinary Arts & Design program. Students finish school after only ten months and enter the workforce as in-demand, work-ready employees with the In-School Training credits required by Apprenticeship Manitoba for a Level 1 Apprentice. And in addition to helping workers go from education to employment in less than a year, the WTC Culinary Arts & Design program provides its graduates with priceless hands-on experience through both classroom training and on-the-job work practicums. To top it off, the price that is put on this learning opportunity is far less expensive when compared to similar programs. "There are lots of unique reasons why students come here to get an education or start a new career, and even more reasons why they've decided to become a chef," says Chef Tonya Savinkoff, Culinary Arts & Design instructor at Winnipeg Technical College and cofounder of the Winnipeg nightlife hotspot 295 York (formerly known as Lobby on York). "But one of the things I hear most often from students when we ask why they chose our program is that it's a lot cheaper [than other culinary arts programs]." At roughly $4000, the tuition fees for the WTC Culinary Arts & Design program are just under half of the annual cost that students pay at Red River College. The program blends in the necessary training in menu preparation, staffing, and day-to-day requirements so that students also gain the skills and knowledge needed to operate a successful enterprise from both the front- end and back-end of a restaurant or catering business. Graduates are expected to be able to run a tight ship and avoid industry pitfalls to keep the books balanced, all of which must be done without making too many compromises on taste and presentation.
