For the second year running, the booming business has been nominated for a Better Business Bureau Torch Award. "We're honoured to be nominated," said Marnie Le Page, who co- owns and operates the company with her husband, Jeff. "In an industry that gets a bad rap, it's nice to stand apart from the rest." And it's no wonder they stand out from the crowd, since JML Roofing and Renovations recently became COR certified through the Construction Safety Association of Manitoba's Certificate of Recognition program. "Right now, we're the only garage builder in Winnipeg with the COR certification. You have to meet all the safety requirements and pass their audits to make sure you're in compliance with workplace health and safety," Le Page said. "We're also in good standing with Workers Compensation, and we've got our liability insurance." Since the company opened in 2000, it has offered professional services in roofing, soffit, fascia and siding. They also build garages and decks, as well as complete renovation projects. "We are family-run. We look after your family and property the way we look after our own. We try to build a good team," Le Page said. "We have our own staff for most of the work and subcontractors for specialized work such as concrete, electrical and stucco. We have a very good relationship with our subcontractors and we have used them for several years." The business is truly in their blood, since Jeff grew up immersed in the construction industry, as did estimator Trevor Gray and crew supervisor Chad Wiebe. These core team members spent their entire lives involved in the industry since their fathers also worked in construction. "They understand that when people call for estimates, this is something they are likely not going to be familiar with. These are projects that you do maybe a few times in a lifetime, and each time it is so different. Our estimators are licensed carpenters. They walk the customer through the process, explaining what the products are and what role they play in their renovation," Le Page said. "We offer a comprehensive estimate that includes everything that is needed to make sure it is up to current building codes and meets requirements set out by the manufacturer to ensure the warranty is valid. People are very happy because they feel comfortable that someone has taken the time and given them the confidence." When it comes to paperwork, JML is on top of the game. They not only provide computerized estimates, but they also maintain impeccable records. "We did a roof for someone in 2003. This year when they went to renew their insurance, they were asked for details on when their roof was last done. They called us because they were unsure of the information. We were able to provide them with a copy of their invoice detailing the work and the date that it was done," Le Page said. "It was e-mailed to them and they then were able to forward it to their insurance company. We give them a detailed invoice outlining the materials used, as well as written warranties. We are one of the only companies that do this." For potential customers, JML can provide examples of completed jobs in their area so they can check out the company's high-quality work. "This also helps when they are trying to decide on shingle colours or the size of a garage to build," Le Page added. The offices and shop for JML Roofing and Renovations are located in Matheson Industrial Park, where the husband-and-wife team owns a building and a fleet of trucks. Their knowledgeable staff offers top-notch service from the initial phone call through to the installation by a crew that includes licensed carpenters and apprentices. "We strive to be professionals, right from our decalled trucks to our computerized estimates. Our crews are easily identifiable on a job site as they are all wearing JML shirts or hoodies," Le Page said. "We offer a good product, we're knowledgeable and we're there to back our work."
