There are Torch Award categories for small, medium and large businesses, including the Advancing Marketplace Trust awards and Marketplace Excellence. An independent panel of judges decides the winners. Most of the judges are business experts from local universities who volunteer their time. "We're hands-off in terms of the actual judging process and results," said Silva. "Nominees have got to put on a good presentation as well in order to win. It's amazing how seriously some companies take it." The BBB is an integrated network of all the bureaus in North America, both in Canada and the U.S. There has been a Manitoba chapter of the BBB for over 80 years. "The Torch Awards are something we're very proud of and something consumers can trust.You've got to have the business practices that justify the Torch logo," Silva said. "If a company wins an award, they've earned it." The BBB is a resource to turn to for objective, unbiased information on businesses. Their network of national and local BBB operations allows them to monitor and take action on thousands of business issues affecting consumers at any given time. All BBB accredited businesses have agreed to live up to the organization's Standards for Trust. The Standards for Trust are a comprehensive set of policies, procedures and best practices focused on how businesses should treat the public – fairly and honestly in all circumstances. The BBB does not compare businesses against each other. They evaluate businesses against their standards, which have been designed to speak to the character and competence of an organization.
