The company produces fresh and frozen semen for domestic and international artificial insemination, and the facility will be able to produce 483,000 doses each year. Bert Swann, economic development officer for the town and RM, says he's pleased that genesus has decided to locate its centre in the area. "Its presence will create jobs for local employees. Based on genesus' state-of-the-art procedures and their economic forecast, the HEDC is confident that genesus will be contributing to the economy well into the future," Swann says. The company is operating out of an existing boar barn and laboratory that has been vacant for several years. It will introduce a state-of-the-art water system that uses reverse osmosis and other technologies to protect against bacteria and ensure a continuous supply of clean water. Randy Lints, reeve of the RM of Hamiota, issued a welcoming statement wishing genesus and everyone involved in pork production the best of luck. "I am very happy the barn will be operational again. Boar barns are a very important part of the produc- tion of pork both in this country and worldwide. Operations like this are a lot more high tech and show just how far pork production has come since the days of individual small family type operations. genetics and a more scien- tific approach to animal production have brought this industry into the 21st century and have helped position farms better to handle disease and make a brighter future for everyone." Mayor Larry Oakden also welcomed genesus to the community saying, "It will be nice to be known as the centre of excellence yet again." Swann says having a company the size of genesus locate to a small town like Hamiota is a big deal for the en- tire area. "We don't get a lot of world-class businesses knocking on our door every day," he says. The boar barn isn't the only good business news the town has had in recent months. A local real estate developer is in the process of building an affordable 55-plus housing complex. "This is a project that Hamiota needs if it is to keep the older generation in the community once they have retired," Swann says, adding that attracting more retirees with disposable incomes to Hamiota would be another benefit to the area. One of the main attractions is a 20- lot subdivision called Willow Heights that has fully serviced lots selling for $30,000-$36,000, depending on size and location. Phase I of the development includes seven large lots and is now being sold. The town and RM set up a booth at the Brandon Home & Leisure Show earlier this month to sell the merits of the region to outsiders, and Swann says the boar stud facility will make Willow Heights attractive to newcomers as well. "We expect that people who secure well-paying jobs at genesus will be some of the first to purchase lots and to build new, upper-scale houses on them." ❙ ArtificiAl intelligence New boar stud facility is good news for Hamiota By David Square For the Free Press If you enjoy a pun, you might agree that Hamiota is an ideal place for a pork production facility. genesus genetics, the WOrld's largest high-health prOducer Of purebred registered breeding stOck, annOunced recently that it Will Open its canadian centre Of gene transfer at a lOcatiOn near hamiOta.
