Bullying is a form of aggression in which children are intentionally intimidated, harassed or harmed. It can take many forms – physical, emotional and most recently, on-line. Bullying has been around for ages – since I was a child and even since our parents and grandparents were children. Unfortunately, in our highly technological world and with the overwhelming presence of social media, bullying is hardly a school yard prank. Children are becoming depressed and in many cases, suicidal. In January of 2012, every student attending school in the city of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, betweenGrades5and8wasaskedtocomplete the Saskatoon Health Survey. A total of 4,197 youth completed the questionnaire, of these 23 per cent reported being physically bullied at least once or twice in the past four weeks. Further to that, students in Grades 5 through 8 within the Saskatoon Tribal Council were asked to complete a youth health survey. Among the seven schools, 204 students completed the survey. Overall, 36 per cent of youth reported being physically bullied, 59 per cent verbally bullied, 48 per cent socially bullied and 30 per cent electronically bullied at least once or twice in the past month. According to the Canadian Public Health Association, bullying is more common for First Nations youth living on reserves compared to other Canadian youth. So, what can we as parents, educators, peers and police officers do to take a pro- active stance against bullying? The WITS Program (Walk away, Ignore, Talk it out and Seek help) is a primary program that teaches Kindergarten to Grade 3 children to make safe and positive choice about peer conflict. It is an excellent tool as it uses common language that children and adults use in their everyday environment. Plus, as with any teaching tool, it is imperative that our students learn about bullying and consequences of bullying at a young age. For older children in Grades 4 to 6, there is the LEADS Program (Look and listen, Explore points of view, Act, Did it work? And Seek help.) ThroughoutManitoba, severalRCMPSchool Resource Officers have completed the WITS training on-line. With that under their belts, these officers visit their assigned schools a minimum of every two months to work with the students and teachers on addressing bullying and using WITS and LEADS as their tools. These programs are recommended by Safe Schools Manitoba and I am confident that by functioning together as a community of kids, parents, leaders and teachers, we can work towards a healthier future.
