PAGE 4 • MAY 2014 NORWAY HOUSE CREE NATIONS BECOMES SIGNATORY TO THE FIRST NATIONS LAND MANAGEMENT ACT On March 3, 2014, Norway HouseCreeNation (NHCN) became signatory to the First Nations Land Management Act. An official signing of the Framework Agreement was held with the Hon. Bernard Valcourt, Minister of Ab- original Affairs and Northern Develop- ment on March 27, 2014 in Ottawa. By signing the Framework Agree- ment, NHCN can now begin the process of opting out of 34 land-related sections of the Indian Act by developing our own land code, laws and policies that will govern NHCN en- vironment, lands, and resources which will be ratified through a community approval process. The First Nations Land Management Regime is yet an- other step towards self-governance. This regime is a necessary catalyst that will fundamen- tally change land governance and promote economic development and self-sufficiency. NHCN Council and I would like to thank Minister Val- court, the depart- ment of Aboriginal Affairs and North- ern Development and the Land Advi- sory Board for their support in beginning this process. We look forward to our continued working relation- ship and collaborative efforts in assuming control over our land and resources. To date, 110 First Nations have become signatory to the First Nations Land Manage- ment Regime and we are pleased to be one of them.
