The course is both immaculate and wild, the staff is one-of-a-kind, and the game is never dull. Long-touted as the premier public course in Manitoba, and one of the top in Canada, Falcon Lake Golf Course has a reputation that's been built on the foundation of timeless design. The facility took form in 1958 under the guidance of Norman Woods, renowned golf architect, who took care of every detail to ensure that even the vegetation grew in complement with the course. The forest-lined track is also famous for being a test of a player's ability. The holes can be challenging, with Falcon Creek winding through the playable landscape, and when played from the back tees, it's a 7000 yard game. Even more engaging than the setting and design is an inviting spirit of entertainment and all-consuming fun. The kind of atmosphere that can only come from people who truly love – and live – the game. Course pro Sandy Kurceba, known by many as the Bald Falcon, brings the spirit alive in his work at Falcon. World-renowned for both his professional game and his performances as a trick shot artist, Kurceba considers himself an entertainer first, and a golf pro second. "I get the most laughs when I flip the putter over my shoulder like a sand wedge to get out of a bunker," Kurceba says. He surprises onlookers with other tricks, like swinging a seven-foot driver, hitting the ball with a rubber- hose shaft, and using a two headed iron or a two headed driver. What sets the Falcon pro apart from other trick shot artists is that he gives his performances a "Happy Gilmore" twist, wearing skates and Adam Sandler-like gear while performing. It's also a tip-of-the-hat to his early career in professional hockey, when he played for the Greensboro Generals in North Carolina. Integrating his various trick shots into clinics for juniors and members, Kurceba aims to show that with good development of the fundamental skills, a golfer can make almost any shot. Kurceba also credits the fun atmosphere at Falcon with the relaxed cottage-country mindset of those who populate the course all summer. He anticipates another good season from May to October this year, with many opportunities to learn on the course and enjoy an entertaining type of game. "We have our men's night and ladies' nights together on Thursdays, so the clubhouse is rocking by 9:00 at night after everyone has had a good time out playing," says Kurceba. "The Falcon Ladies Open is also back, on the first Saturday of June, with about 95 ladies coming in from all parts of Manitoba to play." Many other staple events, including junior nights and the Black Sparrow, will return this season. Plus, a brand new event will attract golfers of all levels to the course with a special community focus. "We're planning to run a big event on the third Thursday in August, to support select charities," says Kurceba. The new event will be a scramble, open to single players and teams of four. Information will be available by contacting the golf shop. As unique as the golf experience is at Falcon Lake, the facility offers so much more to entertain visitors of all ages and interests. Its sports facility boasts six tennis courts, lawn bowles, horseshoes, and a mini putt course. There's also a driving range and putting greens on site, and the course's restaurant where everyone can enjoy basking in the laid-back atmosphere and fresh air on the outdoor patio. More information on everything Falcon Lake Golf Course has to offer this season, including special events, is available by contacting the course (204-349-2554, www. falconlakegolfcourse.com).
