Fortheseventhyearinarow,APTNbringsyouAboriginalDayLive&Celebration on Sat., June 22 at The Forks. The full day of festivities shines a spotlight on Aboriginal cultures – bringing together people and communities in a spirit of sharing and celebration. APTN encourages you to take in the celebration, the FREE activities, LIVE concert and experience the warm Aboriginal hospitality! Celebrations start at 11 a.m. You don't need a ticket, just show up. Last year over 35,000 people gathered at The Forks. Aboriginal Day Live & Celebration is truly shining bigger, better, brighter every year. This year the APTN team has added a few surprises ensuring the recognition and inclusion of all First Nations, Inuit and Métis Peoples. The Celebration Village has expanded with pavilions featuring rotating First Nations, Inuit and Métis performances. Surrounding the stages will be a journey of rich tales, culture and experiences that have served to inform and shape First Nations and their People; a sampling of Nunavut's finest arts, crafts and traditional dance and song performances; and Métis jigging and music that will get your toes tapping! That's not all. You can also expand your cultural experience at the Celebration Village, where you'll find an Artisans Tent filled with local arts and crafts, art and demonstrations by The Manitoba Museum, Saint-Boniface Museum and (new this year) The Winnipeg Art Gallery. Aboriginal Languages of Manitoba will be on-site providing resources and education materials. There will also be children's activities, a storytelling tipi, Frontier College Reading Tent and The Seven Teachings Photo Cut-outs. You can also visit The Aboriginal Music Week Photo Op Booth and the NCI FM Tipi and LIVE broadcast tent where there's always something fun happening. Keeping in step with the diversity of Aboriginal dance, there will also be an Aboriginal Day Competition Pow Wow in partnership with Manito Ahbee Festival at the east end of The Forks. Registration starts at noon, and the Grand Entry begins at 1 p.m. Foradditionaldetails, visit aboriginaldaylive.com/powwow/. Youth will have a chance to ride the ramps by entering the Skate Park Competition presented by STREETZ 104.7 FM. On-air personalities will broadcast LIVE. Drop by to learn tricks from local skaters or watch the demo. The competition starts at noon and ends with a full skate demo at 3 p.m. Registration will be on-site prior to each competition category. The artistic spirit of youth is also honoured at the event with the Aboriginal Day Live & Celebration Flag Contest. Youth from across the nation created original designs showing their pride in the culture and heritage of Aboriginal Peoples. For the national contest, the talented creator of the winning flag design has been invited to Winnipeg to take part in Aboriginal Day Live & Celebration. Be sure to stay at The Forks for Aboriginal Day Live starting at 7:30 p.m. Even if you can't make it down for the day's activities, come down for the concert. The roster boasts some of the biggest names in Aboriginal music and television. Winnipeg's main stage host Michelle Thrush (Blackstone) teams up with co-host Derek Miller (JUNO Award-winning hillbilly Mohawk rocker). Artists include A Tribe Called Red, Crystal Shawanda, Dallas Arcand, George Leach, Kathia Rock, Sagkeeng's Finest and War Party. Also, Tanya Tagaq will awe you with her unique blend of Inuit throat singing. APTN's Chantelle will keep you up to date with everything happening in the social media world.
