With the first day of summer right around the corner, it's time to awaken from our seasonal hibernation, gather with family and friends, and enjoy some outdoor happenings. In addition to being the first day of summer, June 21 is also National Aboriginal Day. The largest celebration in Winnipeg will be Aboriginal Day Live at the Forks, with First Nations, Inuit and Métis Cultural Stages featuring performances throughout the day. The Scotiabank Stage will come alive with the sounds of Billy Ray Cyrus, Lightning Cloud, Mike Bone, Murray Porter, Nelson Tagoona, and Yvonne St. Germaine. It will also include Leonard Sumner, one of the brightest rising stars on today's music scene. Sumner, who now calls Winnipeg home, is from Little Saskatchewan First Nation in Manitoba's Interlake region. His sound is a unique blend of hip hop, country and R & B, complete with insight from the Rez. "I'm inspired by life experiences, listening to people talk, and observing my surroundings. Inspiration can come at any place or time, whether you are paying attention or zoning out. You can't really force it, it has to come naturally and you have to know when to let it take over." "I just try to make genuine music," Sumner says. "I'm happy figuring out my own place as I go along." For the past two years, Sumner has played the smaller stages at The Forks on June 21, and is looking forward to making the leap to a larger audience. "It feels great to finally make the big stage for Aboriginal Day Live. I've been working hard to reach this, and it's definitely a milestone on my musical path." "I'm grateful for the opportunity." Beyond Aboriginal Day Live, Leonard Sumner will be hitting festival stages across Western Canada this summer. His itinerary includes the Vancouver Folk Festival, Harrison Festival of the Arts, Calgary Folk Festival, Edmonton Heritage Days, and the Regina Folk Festival. "It's going to be a busy summer and I'm happy to kick it off at The Forks for #ADL2014." RoseAnna Schick is a freelance writer and entertainment publicist.
