It's a way of measuring how cold the winter night is by the number of dogs you would need to bunk down with in order to stay warm. Three is pretty darn cold. creature comforts Pets stay and play at this critter camp By Wendy King For the Free Press Every dog — and cat — has his day at Waldenway. Photos courtesy of Waldenway Canine & Kitty Camp B ut how about a 17-dog night? That was rob Sarrasin's experience one Christmas at Waldenway Canine & Kitty Camp in Ste. Anne, while trying to accommodate some of his favourite clients. "We had 17 dogs staying in the house with us because all the kennels were full," Sarrasin says. "And it was awesome because they were all different sizes and they were all getting along and loving each other! And then when it was feeding time I'd have to make sure that I fed the ones that ate really fast first so that we could move them to another room in the house. "It was just one of those crazy times that happened when we were growing." Sarrasin has been at Waldenway since he was a 13-year old student in 1993, working with and being trained by the original owner Gloria Delorme, who sold the business to him in 2001. "I learned that I really enjoyed working with the animals," he says. "You have to learn how to read pets and how they react. That's really how I got started." He took a grooming course in 1997, and then Delorme came to him with a proposition on his 22nd birthday. "She said she wanted to retire and she wanted to sell to me," he says. "I really got lucky; she really put a lot of faith into me." Sarrasin was off and running a business. And as it grew, he knew it was really important to have a first-class facility that would stand the test of time and accommodate the kinds of services, including grooming, that he wanted to provide. Every bunkhouse has a window with natural light, and cleanliness is a priority. A high-pressure washing and trough system in the kennels ensures water flows away immediately to keep the dogs high and dry. In-floor heat means the facility can stay clean indoors and out year round. Three acres of greenspace provide plenty of room for dogs to run off leash and chase balls and Frisbees and other toys. For those pups that are so shy they just want to hide in a corner, staff provide personal attention, walking them individually until they come around to realize they are there to have fun. And to keep things mellow, there's classical music. "We made sure to hardwire speakers in everywhere so that music is available to every pet," Sarrasin says. A large pond, complete with a spray fountain, gives the dogs a place to paddle in the heat of the summer. "Last summer, we were swimming on average eight hours a day and they're going at it for 15 minutes or half an hour," he says. "The whole facility is just geared toward keeping everybody as peaceful and happy as possible. And all the staff is trained that way." In addition to hands-on training, all the staff have their pet first-aid and they have learned to recognize and respond to any situation. But it's not just a dog's life at Waldenway — the cats have it pretty good, too. The cat cabin, which is separate from the dog facility, provides each cat with his or her own private window, and a cot at the window ledge so they can sit and look out at strategically placed bird feeders. "They come to us, they purr they want to get petted, they climb and jump, there's multi-levels everywhere from the floor to the ceiling area. They just love it." Sarrasin says there is one thing staff members see time and time again at Waldenway. "When they come, they get to run around and play and have fun, but when it comes time to leave, the dogs always want to run back inside to say goodbye," he says. "Even when we drive them back to the city in our daily shuttle, they run back to the van to say goodbye and a lot of owners say that they stand at the window whimpering after we leave." It's that easy-to-please quality that makes the job fun. "I think all our staff is in the same boat as me," he says. "We all love our jobs."
