Indigenous graduates and
alumni came together in
celebration earlier this year for the
25th Annual Traditional Graduation
Powwow.
The Powwow honours and
commemorates the academic
achievement of Indigenous post-
secondary students from the
University of Manitoba. Over
230 Indigenous graduates were
recognized this year, along with
alumni from the past 25 years, who
were honoured during an evening
ceremony.
A spectacular first Grand Entry
was followed by the Honour
song, presentation of certificates
and, for the first time, a specially
designed scarf to graduates and
alumni. The scarf was designed by
graduating student Dene Beaudry,
who wanted to capture the spirit of
Migizii Agamik – Bald Eagle Lodge,
his home for the past four years.
In recognition of her contributions
to the U of M Indigenous community,
Marlene Atleo, Associate Professor
in the Faculty of Education, was
presented the Migizii Award. The
award is given every year to a
university staff member who goes
above and beyond for Indigenous
students on campus.
As part of the 25th anniversary
celebrations, a Metis Specials
hour featured the Metis University
Students' Association, the Ivan
Flett Memorial Dancers and
musician Ray St. Germain. To mark
the anniversary, 25 Indigenous
alumni were featured over 25 days
leading up to the Powwow.
