Kid Adventures TrAnsConA biZ If you're looking for a festive way to celebrate Canada Day, consider the Transcona Biz Canada Day celebrations at Transcona Centennial Square. The July 1 extravaganza will kick off with an official ceremony from 3 to 3:30 p.m., followed by local entertainment until 5 p.m. Then the Danny Kramer Band will headline the event until it wraps up at 8 p.m. With something for everyone, the Canada Day party includes children's activities, prizes, music, dance, refreshments and more. sTorybook ArT And Fibre Combining arts and the outdoors, Storybook Art and Fibre in Teulon provides farm tours in the warm months. This farm is home to alpacas and llamas, plus heritage chickens, ducks, guinea fowl and miniature horses. Reservations are required, and tours can be customized with picnics, bonfires or workshops. Alpaca products, including hand-dyed yarns, are available at the onsite studio. Both the farm and the tours are open by appointment only. WinkLer hArvesT FesTivAL And exhibiTion From Aug. 8 to 10, it's worth the trip to Winkler for the annual Harvest Festival and Exhibition, which celebrates agricultural heritage through a weekend of free family fun. This year's musical lineup showcases memorable acts such as April Wine on Friday, Aug. 8 and Canadian Idol runner-up Jaydee Bixby on Saturday, Aug. 9. On Sunday, Aug. 10, Christian performer Jeremy Camp will entertain the audience from the main stage. Other highlights include horse shows, agricultural displays, kids' entertainment and fireworks. Fehr-WAy Tours When it comes to day trips, Fehr-Way Tours provides plenty of preplanned ideas throughout the summer, ranging from Grand Forks shopping excursions to lunches on the shores of Winnipeg Beach. There are lots of crafts, events, and activities that are changed up on a regular basis. Best of all, parents have their own area where they can relax while watching their children play. PrAirie dog CenTrAL rAiLWAy The Prairie Dog Central Railway offers a trip back in time that will delight children of any age. Step onboard and appreciate the grandeur of the open prairies as you experience Canadian railroading as it was over 100 years ago. Sit back and relax as the Prairie Dog Central's 1911 Passenger Agent shares stories of Steam Locomotive No. 3 and its five vintage passenger coaches. During the stopover, you can enjoy a bag lunch or pick up a freshly-prepared hotdog or smokie, followed by a selection of melt-in- your-mouth desserts. TinkerToWn FAmiLy Fun PArk The Tinkertown Family Fun Park is outdoor amusement park with over 20 rides and attractions. Cool off with Water Wars, or take a relaxing half- mile ride on the train. Play some games, and then top off the day by having a picnic or sampling the park's wide variety of tasty treats. sky Zone For those with energy to spare, there is Sky Zone. This indoor trampoline park promises a great workout that is tons of fun. Kids love the experience of bouncing, flipping and landing in a pit filled with 10,000 foam cubes—they don't even realize they're exercising. In need of more adventure? Children can test their skills at Ultimate Dodgeball, which combines the traditional game with wall-to-wall trampolines. AdrenALine AdvenTures Speaking of adventure, Adrenaline Adventures offers a number of exciting activities, including cable wakeboarding, paintball, and zip-lining. The Adrenaline Ropes Course features two separate canvas-covered towers connected with a two-story skywalk challenge. There is no minimum age for participants, but children under 54 inches tall (four feet, six inches) should be accompanied by a parent or adult supervisor. CroCk A doodLe If your child is more artist than athlete, they will love Crock A Doodle and its paint-it-yourself pottery. Pottery-painting programs are a great way to nurture creativity and build self-esteem in budding artists. Each class will teach kids a new pottery-painting technique so they can create a masterpiece, and parents will get one-of-kind works of art to treasure forever. mini CAr ToWn Mini Car Town offers smaller children the opportunity to learn about safe driving while having a blast. Kids ages four to seven will learn the meaning of various traffic signs before driving battery-powered, kid-sized cars through a mini streetscape. The six cars can seat two children each—a driver and passenger. A parent or adult supervisor must accompany each child through the course. mArine museum oF mAniTobA If you don't mind a short trip, The Marine Museum of Manitoba, located in Selkirk, is the perfect way to spend a rainy day. Tours of the museum are approximately one hour to 90 minutes long, as guides take groups through the six ships the museum has on display. Unlike most museums and galleries, everything is touchable and visitors of all ages are encouraged to turn the ship wheels and ring the bells. deer meAdoW FArms Also worth the trek is Deer Meadow Farms. Located about five minutes from Winnipeg, the farm features a petting zoo, corn maze, wagon train rides, a wild game preserve, farmer golf and lots of other fun things to do. mAniTobA museum sCienCe gALLery Kids can test the universal laws of science and explore the wonders of technology and illusion in The Manitoba Museum's Science Gallery. This entertaining, hands-on atmosphere lets children become scientists as they explore dozens of challenging exhibits. Each exhibit offers operating instructions and a short explanation of the science at work. The Science Gallery was renovated in 2007 and contains a mix of new exhibits and old favorites. The Matrix mirror room and Flash Room are still there, as well as lots of exhibits that cover the basics of science. Older children may enjoy Lake Winnipeg: Shared Solutions, a virtual-reality game that challenges visitors to save the lake from destruction. The WesTern CAnAdiAn AviATion museum The Western Canada Aviation Museum lets kids "fly" a plane, spot a flying saucer, and conquer the wind. Their children's gallery features interactive scanners, demonstrations, cockpits, wind tunnels, instrumentation and more.
